When should I cut my cedar hedge ?

The best time to trim a cedar hedge is in the spring, in May, and can last until early November. Generally, we will wait a year of regrowth to maintain your cedar hedge. Here are some guidelines to better understand the effects on hedge cutting according to the weather of the season :
Frequently Asked Question
Early May - Mid June
Young growth, small cedar hedge and shrub. Promotes growth through out the summer, rapid recovery. A second cut during the summer would improve is thickness.
Mid June - End August
Intense heat, excellent for recovery. Beautiful cut, beautiful finish for summer. Water well for a well maintained cedar hedge. Ideal for most cedar hedges.
Early September - End of November
Slow down cedar growth, allows slower recovery each year. Ideal for large hedges that are more difficult to maintain under control. Ideal to prevent breakage caused by winter
It is suggested to maintain your cedar hedge every year to avoid cedar breakage in winter. You can also protect them with a protective fence, so the snow banks cannot damage them. In addition, the density of the foliage will be better by pruning the cedar hedge each year.
How should I cut my cedar hedge ?

Cedar hedges must be trimmed under the foliage to give an even and uniform shape. A normal regrowth each year varies between 4 and 8 inches. It is therefore necessary to make sure that the regrowth is well cleaned without removing too much. Pruning too much inside could create holes in your cedar hedge.

For our part, we suggest a 45 degree angle finish or a rounded cut. The objective is to facilitate snow removal and prevent snow accumulation from damaging your cedar hedge. The ideal would be to keep a height under control, generally between 8 and 12 feet. You can check with your municipality to see if any regulations are required.
How much cost to trim my cedar hedge ?

There are several factors that determine the price of pruning a cedar hedge. In an evaluation, a representative takes notes of certain key points. Here some of them :
  • Lenght
  • Height
  • Thickness to reduce
  • Hazards ( e.g electrical wire )
  • Difficulty of the terrain
Thereafter, the representative will have a better idea of the situation and will be able to develop an action plan for the work to be done. Generally, prices are arranged as follows :
  • Small shrub - Starting at 40$ and +
  • Small hedge - Starting at 100$ and +
  • Medium to large hedge - Between 250 and 500$
  • Very large hedge - Starting at 500$ and +
As a general rule, the vast majority of cedar hedges are medium in size and are trimmed within a day.
